Stand and Deliver was a drama movie made in 1988 that was based on true story. This is the story of Jaime Escalante, a high school teacher, who successfully inspired his dropout prone students to learn calculus. In the class that he is assigned to, there are some students that did not speak English, however he knows Spanish very well. Also the students are way below their grade level in terms of academic skills and they also have a lot of social problems. Throughout the year, Mr. Escalante engages all of his students and totally turns the school upside down. From a school that was close to getting a probation, Mr. Escalante’s teaching resulted in 18 students passing the AP Calculus test and the number of students that passed kept raising each year after. …show more content…

In Mr. Escalante’s class, 18 of his students passed the Advanced Placement Test in Calculus. However there was a twist in his students taking the test. The Testing Service, states that his student must have cheat when it was discovered that 12 of his students gave the same incorrect answer to one question on the test. This reveals that the response by the Testing Service raised questions of racism. However, when the students retested, all 18 students passed a second exam. In this example, it is clear that the Testing Service was questioning if the students cheated because they were hispanic and the school that they were from did not the most educate students. It also shows how, with hard work, the barriers a disadvantaged background can be overcome. The connection of the families, gangs, struggle with school played a major role in this movie. In the movie we meet Angel. He is in a gang, however Mr. Escalante changes his perspective. Now Angel has found reasons to try to get out of the gang and to get a better future.
