The movie takes place in Long Beach, California in 1992 -1995 at Woodrow Wilson High School. They school recently had an integration program put in place, majority of the administration is upset because their beloved school is no longer prestigious as it once was. Erin Gruwell is the new English teacher, she is more than excited to teach, but she soon learns that she would be teaching students that are at risk in other words the “unteachables.” As Ms. Gruwell looks around in the other classrooms, she notices that the upper lever classrooms have good desks, are clean, and they have the opportunity to use books that are in good conditions. Most of these students don't have someone at home to help them to get an education, they are more interested in fighting for their gang, showing their pride, and of doing what they think is correct for them. The do not trust and like any teach because of them teachers are not interested in helping, of getting to know them in a personal level, and teaches simply don't care students are just another number. Ms. Gruwell had to find a way to give her student feedback but not feedback that might damage them as students. “Feedback means check effects of messages…positive feedback means keep doing what you’re doing and negative feedback means change what you’re doing”(). Ms. Gruwell use this type of feedback with her students, she avoided by giving her students feedback that might overwhelm them. Instead she told them that what they were doing was good and to keep working on it or she would give them negative feedback which meant that they need to change. For example, one of Ms.Gruwell students was upset that his brother got convicted; making the student feel miserable of the situation he was in. He decides to sell drugs on the corner instead of doing is reporting, Ms. Gruwell might not have used the proper language to talk to this student, but she clearly states to him that she knows he could do better, she is sorry about the conviction of this brother but life moves on.
