Transgender personnel have already served with distinction in todays military and deserve the opportunity to be recognized for who they are. Removing the institutional barriers that prevent transgender personnel from serving openly, gives them the same opportunities their brothers and sisters in arms already experience, will unlock health care benefits and treatments that have not been previously provided, yet the most daunting task will be figuring out the leadership and logistics challenges for transgender integration. The military has traditionally been used to overcome cultural and social biases in America, from Blacks serving in the civil war, to the recent integration of homosexuals into the military. The next debated subject is what physical fitness standards would transgender armed service members adhere to? Currently male and female requirements are based on physiological disparities and a male who recognizes himself as a female would find it much easier to pass a physical fitness test than a female who now has to take a test at the male standards. This will attest to the character of each transgender person, because if they truly identify with the gender they have chosen they should be willing to accept the standard for their choice. Training has been initiated across the force to facilitate how transgender personnel will be treated and what things to expect during their integration. Some armed forces members will not conform to these principles and will get out willingly or forcefully. Those service members that heed their training and have the mental flexibility will help build the military services of the future. Transgender individuals are already serving in the ranks of the armed forces. Getting rid of the recognized obstacles that inhibit transgender personnel from operating as their identified gender, presents them with the identical chance their fellow service members have, will solve the health care offered for their mental and physical needs, and will give our leaders the opportunity to overcome the leadership and logistical difficulties for transgender incorporation into our
