The ever-increasing change in the make-up of our country’s social climate has a tremendous impact on how companies approach their efforts of profitability. To be competitive, companies must be aware of the diversity in our society and act on that knowledge to advance and care for the needs of its most important resource, its people. “As a result of these demographic shifts, HR management in organizations has had to adapt to a more varied labor force both externally and internally” (Mathis, et.al, 2017, section 1-5c, para 1). Companies are starting to adopt a broader definition of the word “diversity”, like the one found on dictionary.com that defines diversity as, “the inclusion of individuals representing more than one national origin, color, religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation, etc.” (2018). Awareness-based training is a popular approach in which employees are made aware of the importance of diversity in business. It also helps employees uncover their hidden assumptions and biases. “Behavior-based training educates participants on monitoring their own actions and giving appropriate responses to specific differences in the workplace” (Bezrukova, Jehn & Chester, 2012, p. 217).
