The American Civil War was known to many American citizens as one of the bloodiest and goriest wars that was fought in the United States. The war was between the Confederates of the southern states and the Union of the northern states. However, the reason for the outbreak of the internal conflict was because of the decision for the United States to become a Confederate or Union state. This also included the biggest decision of all which was the ability of all Americans to have equal rights which put slavery in the crossfire. Once the war began states from both sides sent soldiers to fight and the state of Ohio sent more than 260 regiments of men including cavalry units, artillery units, and infantry units. One of the many infantry units that was sent was the 99th Ohio volunteer infantry unit that consisted of soldiers from the counties of Allen, Auglaize, Hancock, Mercer, Putnam, Shelby, and Vanwert. This infantry unit played a very significant role in the development and success of the Union Army during the American Civil War. They were on duty in Nashville until December 26 and then they were to go to Murfreesboro and they arrived on December 30. While they traveled they were under heavy stress from marching as well as the extreme heat which allowed disease to become very rampant. As a result there was only 369 men, 2 field officers, 7 line officers, and 3 staff officers who participated in the Battle of Stones River. When they arrived they fought in the Battle of Stones River from December 30 to January 3, 1863. They then remained on duty at Murfreesboro until June 23 when they joined the Tullahoma Campaign until July 7. From here they marched to McMinnville and was there until August
