The conflict theory’s focus on divorce inspects the imbalance and power dynamics that are held within a society that can trickle down to individuals and their marital relationships. A society that is constantly in a state of battling and oppressing for distribution of limited resources plays a role in each and every divorce. Divorces are offered at a costly price, and the distributions of the assets between the two can often cause even more strife among couples feeling deeply saddened and/or resentful. Unrealistic expectations as well as underlying unresolved issues in individuals also play a role in divorces. Social media has a lot of perks like keeping in touch with your loved ones as well as sharing special moments with others and having all those moments in one place. The downside of social media is that there is a lot of room for miscommunication and a major loss of privacy. The normalization of checking your partner’s social media accounts is something that would often be joked about but is now a serious problem that dating couples and even married couples face. There are so many social media platforms that open the door for interacting with new people far and wide. The problem with this is that couples are very aware of the chance that cheating could easily occur. Checking your partner’s social media accounts looking for traces of unfaithfulness obviously shows that trust is not established in these relationships. Looking through your partner’s social media accounts for pictures or statuses that they are liking or who they are messaging not only shows a lack of privacy and trust but also could show that one partner is feeling insecure or suspicious. It is obvious that women in the lime light are hypersexualized beings mainly for the entertainment of men, and that can make women feel insecure to see their husbands lusting after women that just don’t look like them. However, it is not required in any law or form of rules regarding marriage to receive marriage counseling. Marriage counseling could benefit couples to practice healthy patterns of communication as well as problem solving skills that could be used during difficult times before and after the wedding. Counseling can be very beneficial to individuals as well as couples but the cost can be very draining to those who want to seek counseling. The average cost of divorce is $15.500, and that doesn’t even account for the amount of time and stress that divorcing couples go through during the process of separating. I think free marriage counseling being something that is required could definitely help in lowering the divorce rates in our country. Something else that has to be discussed is the satire in television and movies that normalize being in unhappy and unhealthy relationships and finding distractions to not confront relational issues. The “getting married ruined my life” rhetoric is something that is seen as funny amongst married couples on these shows, but the sad part is that it is really not that much of a joke. It is seen as a completely ordinary thing to be unhappy in your marriage and find humor in the unsatisfying situation.
