History of Divorce in the U.S. Divorce has become a shocking reality for many families all over the U.S. in the twenty-first century. It is saddening to think back to when divorce was a forbidden practice. Divorce in the eighteenth century was considered to be a last option type of decision. It is even stated in the Bible, specifically in Matthew 5:31-32 that, It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce. But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. The dissolution of marriage or what is commonly known as divorce, is the legal process in which a judge or another authority disbands the oaths of matrimony. The process of filing for divorce is simple, whereas the effects and issues of divorce are more complicated. There are many issues that can arise when filing for divorce such as spousal support, child custody agreements, child support, distribution of property, and division of any debt accumulated during the marriage. An article from the LaManita Law Firm, found that in 2012, there were over two million marriages in the United States alone. Uniquely, in that same year, there were 851,000 divorces and annulments. More Importantly, divorce is brought up numerous times in the Old and New Testament. I believe that it is safe to say that God despises divorce. The Bible is very clear about the few exceptions where divorce is tolerable. For example, in 1 Corinthians 7:39 it says, “A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives.
