Throughout the world, people suffer from mental disorders that require treatment. In order to treat a patient that has a mental disorder, health care professionals use a handbook called The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) that is a guide to diagnosing a patient. DSM includes specific criteria involving symptoms and the description. The handbook is updated due to changes or modification. Health professionals migrated from the fourth edition to the fifth edition. For instance, I was assigned dissociation disorder which is when a person has a condition the disrupts their memory process, identity, or perception (Wang 2016). When viewing the disorder through the American Psychiatric Association, I notice changes with numerous mental conditions; however, dissociation disorder was not in the list of changes. What I did see is the dissociation disorder may be associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The changes are mostly modified and state a clearer line in detail in the fifth edition as opposed to the fourth edition. The fifth edition explains more behavior symptoms. For years health professionals used the ninth edition and in recent years ICD book it was modified to the tenth edition. The ICD 10 book categorized dissociation disorder under neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders F40-F48. Dissociation disorders have a list of different types of disorders which include amnesia, fugue, stupor, trance and possession and the list goes on. Being that I was only given dissociation disorder and no description of the condition I would probably use the dissociative (conversion) disorder, unspecified
