Angel Gonzalez Professor Jessica Lugo Composition II May 14th 2024 Research Paper In this paper, we will analyze the difficulty of distinguishing androids from humans because of how similar they are to Philip K. Dick's book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? It's difficult to differentiate because there is a blurred line between androids and humans. The implication in the book is that androids are incapable of empathy. Empathy is the emotion that is searched for in beings to differentiate them in this society. Some of the android characters can show empathy, and some of the human characters lack it. Garland brings Phil in to question Rick. Phil is another bounty hunter who exhibits behavior that is stereotypically nonhuman. Phil has a lack of empathy. During the questioning, Phil disagrees with Garland and wants the higher-ups to take the Voigt-Kampff test. The Voigt-Kampff test is used to see if you are human or android by revealing if the person is empathetic. While Phil steps out, Garland admits that he and everyone on the list are androids from Mars. Garland points out that Phil joined the androids from Mars after they arrived and that Phil is an android himself. Phil re-enters the room, and Garland tries to kill Phil with a concealed weapon, but Phil reacts fast enough and kills Garland before he gets killed. Rick informs Phil that the New Hall of Justice is an undercover operation run by androids to counter bounty hunters. Phil and Rick sneakily get out of the building and leave. Once they escape from the hall, they learn Luba Luft is one of Rick's target locations at a nearby art museum. Androids are below animals due to a lack of empathy. Androids would not be able to care for and love animals the way humans do, due to a lack of empathy. Androids can't use animals to gain value in this society, on top of already being discriminated against. Brand wrote, “The androids in Do Androids Dream show little compassion towards animals, and on one occasion they even torture a spider out of amusement. However, the dual nature of the androids and robots of either being harmless and friendly or cruel and dangerous suggests that they are much like we humans are, as humans are also prone to do both good and bad things.” pg 19. Three android characters named Pris, Stratton, and Batys torture a spider out of amusement, showing us directly why society sees androids as less than animals because of a lack of empathy. This doesn't make them less human; like Brand said, humans are prone to doing both good and bad. Rick questions his morals after hunting some androids because he realizes they are capable of showing similarities to humans.
