“Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” by Dylan Thomas. This poem was a famous example for poetic form called villanelle. It was arranged by two repeating rhymes and two refrains. Using the uppercase word as the refrain and the lowercase word as the rhyme, it was expressed as A1 b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 A2. However, the poet did not wrote this poem to seek for fame but rather it was for his father, David John Thomas, when he was on the brink of death, urging his father to fight to live and do not give on life easily. For this second tercet, it was about philosophers or scholars given that he labelled the men as “wise men”. This tercet may suggest that even though these philosophers knew their end was getting nearer, but the poet exhorted that these philosophers should not give up without achieving their dreams. This was shown in line five “Because their words had forked no lightning they”, the philosophers was usually known for their works or words and since their words did not make a big influence on this world, they should not die silently. In addition, for the last line of the tercet, the poet repeated the line “Do not go gentle…” to emphasize that they should not give up easily without making a change in this world or making their name known to the whole world. For the third tercet, the poet described about the moral men faced their death and compared it to the ocean. From my opinion, “… the last wave …” was about the last generation of the good men. For this stanza, I interpret it as, no matter how much good deeds the honest men did, no matter how they kept telling their stories of good deeds, it will still not be remembered no matter how significant their deeds were. So, Dylan was trying to urge these people to keep living even though they are dying, it was like if they live longer, they would show a fine example to next generation of the honorable
