Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night
1. After listening to Thomas reading his poem, did you expect it to be read as he had? How would you read this poem aloud; what words would you emphasize and why?
I expected him to read it in a dark way with a scary tone, however he read it more calmly then I had expected since the poem to me sounded a bit dark. The words I would emphasize would be words such as “curse” and “rage, rage against the dying light.” As that word was repeated throughout the poem and could convey the speaker’s urgency and determination to fight against death. I would also emphasize words such as “night: to convey the peacefulness and acceptance that the speaker ultimately calls for.

Another example is the use of rhyme specifically the theme of fear and tears in the line “ And you, my father, there on the sad height/ Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray” helps to reinforce the theme of strong emotions that can eb experienced in everyday life and improved the flow of the …show more content…

Do you agree with the narrator's opinion that he was "driven and derided by vanity"? Why or why not?
I agree with the narrators opinion because he does not seem to be motivated by a desire to impress the girl he is infatuated with and to prove himself to her he does not seem to be driven by vanity and he's just trying to get the girl he likes a gift more out of an act of kindness.
4. Why doesn't the narrator buy anything? (Hint: it is not just because the market is closing up)
Because he is disappointed by the mundane and commercialized nature of the bazaar when he arrives at Araby he is expecting to find a magic one exotic place, but instead is confronted with rows of stalls selling cheap and uninterested goods. the contrast between his eyes version of Araby and the reality of the bizarre jarring and disillusioning for him, and he's unable to find anything that he wants to buy the young woman working at the bazaar is unenthusiastic and rude, further dampening the nervous excitement and desire to purchase anything another reason that he may not have bought anything is he may not have had enough money.
