Many people would argue that video games are just some silly hobby that only “nerds” play, instead of socializing. Is this a simple fact, or a faceless opinion? Researchers have studied and created theories to prove if this statement is wrong or right. Video gamers will argue all day that playing video games takes mass amount of skill and time, which makes it a sport. Effortless hours of playing, the skills a person needs to play the video games, and the amounts of money spent on this “hobby”, will prove if this is a sport or not. Without the skills needed to play the sport, one may not be able to make the team, or succeed at the sport. Let us take football as an example to show what kind of skills are needed to play the game. In football, you need to have “strong muscles, agility, balance, speed, and power”. Without the skills listed above, a person cannot play the sport of football very well. So what type of skill does it require a person to have in order to play a very competitive video game? The type of skills it requires would be “investigation, troubleshooting, hand-eyes coordination, tolerance to repetitive and tedious tasks, and analytic thinking”. Analtyic thinking is very important because “If you trying to get a job in a company that doesn’t consider testers as clicking monkeys, they will likely require you to be able of analytic thinking. What does that mean? If they give you a specification document mentioning that the game should accomplish X and Y, you should be able to write test scenarios covering different aspects of X and Y. This skill is quite common requirement in the world of software testing.” As a person can see, video games require just as much hard work and skill as any other sport would need to have.
