Why Do We Consume a Lot Why do we consume a lot when it comes to shopping or buying products? From the first developed computer known as IBM (International Business Machines) during the 1950’s now emerges a new generation of Microsoft and Apple computers, which took over the globe due to its updated advanced technology. Based on Thomas Frank’s contention that marketing no longer promotes conformity, but rather “never-ending fulfillment” and “constantly updated individualism” (Para. 6), I do agree because not only does marketing no longer promote conformity, but it also creates psychological consequences to consumers. When one sees the Apple and Windows logo usually seen on the back of any laptops/computers, two images appear in mind, which are: Steve Jobs, Apple Founder and Bill Gates as the founder of Microsoft computers. According to a blog (Mysterious Temple), “Marketers got the idea to encourage society to break the rules, to be different, or as most refer to it as become rebellious. It is a trick from the marketing industry to get people to consume their product.” For instance, both Apple and Microsoft computers has been a real target to almost all consumers. Their products keeps buyers updated and well informed whenever a new product emerges every year. The strategy in this business is the increase of sales and achieving a sustainable competitive advantage. Apple, for instance, does get several updates of its products each year such as the I-Phone 6, I-Pad/I-Pad mini, Mac Book Pro, Apple Watch, etc. Based on the reading (text), “when Apple can persuade you to buy a computer because its guy is just plain cooler than some IBM nerd, there may be no way out.” (Pg. 163) According to Psychology today, “Apple works with powerful cues signaling ownership that are apparent even when their product itself is hidden from view.” Apple products always a great demand for many
