Electric Cars in Utah In the past year, one thousand, one hundred and twenty-nine people have driven hybrid or electric vehicles. Many people in Utah argue about whether or not we should use electric cars. I believe that cars powered by gasoline are better and safer than electric cars because switching to electric will cause a lot of people to lose their jobs, it will not improve air quality, and it will actually add to the pollution. The employees working at the fossil fuel industry will lose their jobs if Utah switches to electric cars. According to Brian Kahn in his article, “The World Is on the Brink of an Electric Car Revolution,” he says “The shift to electric vehicles will disrupt the fossil fuel industry.” Meaning the fossil fuel industry will be damaged because of the rise of electric vehicles. Geoffrey Smith explains in his article “You Think Electric Cars Will Save the Planet? Think Again,” that many other transportations relies on electricity. Emissions from planes and boats, which rely on oil, will counterbalance any savings from electric cars unless something can be done. Smith then adds that right now there is not any substitutes for oil for planes at the moment. This means that even if you switch to electric cars it won’t do anything unless you find a way to switch planes and boats. Electric cars will actually make the environment worse. David Biello in his article “Electric Cars Are Not Necessarily Clean,” says “ Although the battery-powered car itself doesn’t produce any emissions, the power plant that generates the electricity used to charge those batteries probably does.” Battery powered cars don’t put any pollution into the air themselves, but the power plants that create the energy for them do. If more people choose electric cars, the power plant providing the energy has to produce more energy, therefore putting more fumes into the air and damaging the
