In 1891, the amazing invention of basketball was invented by a physical education instructor at a YMCA rec center named Doctor James Naismith. Naismith was asked by the director of physical education, Dr. Luther Gulick to invent a new game that athletes could play during the winter to keep the track and field athletes in shape during the winter (Hiskey). Naismith was given two weeks to come up with such a game that revolutionized the whole sports world. Basketball was inspired by a game he played as a child called “Duck on a Rock” (Hiskey). When the first game of basketball was played, Naismith was able to use a soccer ball and a basket for the game. Chase that was shot from 25 feet away (Hiskey). But thankfully the peach baskets did not last forever; the baskets were thrown out for iron rims and nets as early as 1893 (Hiskey). But just like the baskets which didn’t have an open bottom, the nets were a closed bottom until someone had a smart idea to have open bottomed nets to get rid of the hassle of getting the ball out. The game of basketball has come a long way from then because it went from being a very unknown game at a YMCA to being one of the most popular sports in the world getting millions and millions of fans to come out to basketball games every single night. Basketball has impacted us a great deal today because we have many great players such as Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Dwayne Wade who are role models to young kids now. Today, basketball is worldly loved by many different countries and nations and is watched by millions because it is such a beautiful game. Dr. James Naismith brought us a game that started out small but is now a extremely fun game and a wonderful game to play, and analyze as a player, coach, or even a fan. All in all, basketball will forever be a sport everyone will always remember him
