Ever since I was a young girl I have developed a keen interest in science. One day while I was looking through the bookshelf of my fourth grade classroom I encountered a large hardcover book buried beneath the countless number of picture books. The cover read “Discover the World of Science.” Everyday I would immerse myself in the book and absorb every fact presented to me. As my knowledge about the planets and the human body grew, my interest and curiosity about science grew as well. This curiosity has continued to follow me and has helped me develop an interest in biochemistry and the medical sciences. Since I come from a traditional hispanic household, many of the women in my family were encouraged to stay home and tend to the needs of their husbands and children. I, however, have a different aspiration, which is to pursue a career in medicine. I want to break the stereotypical roles a woman "should" uphold and confidently lead my own journey to becoming surgeon without having the “stigma” of not upholding cultural values plague me. The path to become a doctor is a rigorous one and therefore I believe that WISE is the best place to help me achieve my goals. Being surrounded by women who are just as passionate about the sciences as I am would create a positive atmosphere and overall positive college experience. WISE provides study groups led by an undergraduate mentor that consists of five or six other first year WISE students. Collaborating with fellow WISE students in these groups would enrich me beyond measure and I hope that my own enthusiasm for science and medicine can inspire others as well.
