David France is an American investigative reporter, nonfiction author, and filmmaker. He is best known for his investigative journalism on LGBTQ+ topics. His book How to Survive an Epidemic, which covers the US AIDS epidemic, was longlisted for an Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence, put on numerous ‘top-ten’ and ‘best of’ lists, was a New York Times 100 Notable Books for 2016. The book has since been turned into a documentary, also titled How To Survive A Plague, in which he used plenty of footage from the early days of the AIDS epidemic. France has been reporting on the epidemic since its early days, he moved to New York City just two weeks before the first report appeared in newspapers. He lived in what was known as the “epicenter” of the East Coast epidemic for the first publicised decade and lost his partner of five years to AIDS. …show more content…

Johnson as my first documentary for this assignment. This documentary helps to create a legacy for this LGBT figurehead for generations to come, helping to document this incredible woman so she would never be forgotten. After the Stonewall movie came out in 2015, people were nervous about people covering this topic. Stonewall was supposed cover the riots at The Stonewall Inn in 1969 when Johnson and another trans activist Sylvia Rivera began their fight against the massive prejudices against the LGBTQ+ community however the movie was completely whitewashed, having an ‘All American, blue eyed’ guy start the riot. The Stonewall Riots served as a catalyst for the Gay Rights Movement- a movement that blanked the trans people who helped to start it; much like the movie blanked Rivera and Johnson.
