Did you know that more than 1 in 3 people have experienced cyberthreats online? Have you experienced or have seen cyberbullying take place? Cyberbullying is the willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of electronic devices. I think that students who are responsible for cyberbullying should be suspended or expelled from school. Although the internet can’t be controlled, there is documented proof of cyberbullying online and these cyber bullies would be stopped. Cyber bullies should be suspended or expelled from school because cyberbullies would be stopped from bullying again. These kids need to be taught a lesson for their choice of actions. Even if they delete the message, it can still be accessed. This information can be used against the cyberbully when being punished. Cyberbullying can lead to things like anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens, with 4,400 deaths per year. For every suicide, there are at least 100 attempts (bullyingstatistics.org). Documented proof plays a big part in not only punishing the cyberbully, but it also may save someone’s life. No matter how hard schools try, they cannot control the Internet. The 2010-2011 School Crime Supplement indicates that 9% of students in grades 6-12 experienced cyber bullying (stopbullying.gov). All of this new technology only makes this percentage increase each year. Technology gives bullies a whole new platform for their actions. As technology grows and becomes more advanced, so will cyberbullying. It can be argued that because cyberbullying happens off campus, cyber bullies may receive full First Amendment protection and it is not under the school’s jurisdiction. Although this is true, cyber bullying can affect the victim’s performance and social environment at school.
