Many people think that birth order dictates what a child will be like, but birth order does not have any effect on a child’s future. They believe that birth order is exactly right, and it can be used to predict the future success or personality of a child. For example, the oldest child will be the smartest and will become a CEO of a company, and the youngest child will be a free spirit. Research does not support the stereotypes of birth order. In the article “Birth Order Affects Child 's Intelligence and Personality,”Rachael Rettner states that “First-born received higher test scores, in math and verbal ability, while later born children had better grade point averages in English and math” (Rettner par.10). While older siblings may test higher than younger siblings, birth order doesn 't really have an effect on intelligence. Many factors other than birth order play into test scores. Most children do not learn in the same way or learn at the same pace as other children. Siblings may have different teachers or even attend different schools.
