Poe was a very effective writer, he earned the name “Father of the Detective Story”. His writing, was mostly short stories, where he wrote mostly about terror and madness. Although he wrote short stories, he wrote many poems. One of Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous poems is the “Raven.” The Raven discussed a bird talking to a man by replying “nevermore” to any question he was asked. This drove the narrator crazy and cause a big disturbance. This is exactly the reason why any of his narrators would be unreliable. These narrators of these stories cannot be trusted with tell the truth. The truth plays a major factor in reliability. If a narrator cannot tell the truth, how can you believe he/she is reliable? He hurt his animals and wife after becoming madder. The unreliability here comes from how quickly the narrator changes attitude toward both his wife and animals. After that, the narrator decided to turn to alcohol, this alcohol drove him insane and that is where Pluto was treated badly. The narrator turns into an alcoholic showing how we cannot trust him, His madness reached a peak where he took out the cat’s eye. The narrator explain how his soul was not bothered by anything he did. Later on, when he tries to kill his cat Pluto his wife gets in the way and he still kills it. This cat then begins to irritate him and he hangs the cat from the tree. His madness contributes to the unreliability because after this he writes from his jail cell “I did it precisely because it was wrong.” The madness overcomes the narrator showing his insanity. That night the house catches on fire and burns down. There is a imprint of a “gigantic cat” with a rope around his neck on the wall. The man thought a neighbor cut the cat down and throw it through a window. Unfortunately, the idea of thinking is nonsense and shows how mad the man is. Poe’s use of coincidences and madness are the main factors contributing to the narrator’s unreliability. With the narrator writing this story from a jail cell, it creates an emotion toward the reader in a negative way. The reader can feel untrustworthy toward this narrator accounting for unreliability. Another story showing unreliability through the narrator is “The Masque of the Red Death”. A disease called “The Red Death” is spreading rapidly and is causing victims to die quickly and gruesomely.
