Yes a society can live on hate. If you look at any societies in the modern world there are hate everywhere, just take a look all around us everyone is hating on someone. Just look at all the problem we are having in the United States, there are racial discrimination, corrupt government, and many more. We are used to living in a society that lives on hate, yes it's true that it is not as extreme as it's in the book 1984, but it does exists and we live in it. One society in the modern world that is living on hate is North Korea. North Korea is a good example because they live on the idea to hate America, to serve their country to death. And just like the book 1984 and they have the police to keep all the people in check from having their freedom of speech and thought. The north korean are living in the 21st century but operate like they are in the 19th century, just like in north korea in the book the government control what you hear and what you watch for example they will play propaganda music and will show things on television such as the how they are beating america in the race of technology. When racial hate exists there are very big sacrifices happen especially to young lives of our society, like when a white police officer shot an African-American teen because he thought he looked suspicious. Also when the government Spies on you by going through your phone just because they think you're a threat to the government. These things cause us to have hate over other people and the government itself. Therefore it shows hows the world we live in a is living on
