Throughout the short story “Bread and the Land” by Jeffery Renald Allen, the author uses a combination of literary elements and techniques to convey Hatch’s complex relationship with his grandmother. One of the author’s most used techniques is characterization. Through the narrative and dialogue, Allen shows the reader the different aspects of Hatch’s relationship with his grandmother. It is clear that Hatch is a complex character that is interesting to watch throughout the story, one example of his complexies and how the author utilizes characterization to demonstrate Hatch’s personality is narrated at one point in the story "Hatch never asked for help, he just worked harder ''.
A significant motif of The Painted Bird is the comparison between the primitive aspects that the boy experiences in the countryside that contrast his upbringing in civilization. The child’s strongest memory of his past life is his “appendix operation when [he] was only four years old” (Kosinski 10). Liliana Villa In this section of In the Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez uses various literary elements specifically interior monologue, and figurative language to show how Mate discovers she is willing to sacrifice herself for the movement. Mate was taken by officers in hopes she could be used as persuasion towards Leonardo through torture. When Leonardo tells the officers to leave her out of it, the officers in turn beat Leonardo. Mate, being in shock, began screaming for them to stop, she claims “It felt like my very own stomach was being punched”, which shows at first Mate was only thinking about what was happening to her own life.

Daphne du Maurier’s short story “The Birds” is a piece of fiction that displays many literary elements. This story displays suspense, foreshadowing, and imagery. By using these literary elements du Maurier creates an intense story that leaves the readers wondering what happens next and wanting more. First, foreshadowing is used to reference events that will happen further into the story.
In the poem, the speaker and his father “argue about the price of pomegranates” (Salinas 4) and he tries to convince his father that “it is the fruit of scholars” (Salinas 7). Conversely, his father believes that his son should simply “eat more oranges” (Salinas 11). Pomegranates and oranges have absolutely different features which symbolizes two types of lifestyle, one is complex and well educated as a writer, the other one is simple and poor educated as a worker. Meanwhile, in the short story “A Secret Lost in the Water”, even though the narrator’s father has a strong desire to pass on his traditional skill, using an alder bough to find “spring beneath the earth” (Carrier 2) as a portion of vital household wealth through generations, the narrator has a great passion for literature and much later, he becomes a writer. This underground spring is a significant clue in the story which symbolizes an old wisdom, a part of family heritage and a close relationship between two generations.

In the poems “Sympathy” by Paul Laurence Dunbar and “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou, both portray captive birds that sing. However in “Sympathy”, the bird pleads with god for freedom, whereas in “Caged Bird” the captive bird calls for help from a free bird. In “Sympathy” the bird knows what freedom feels like since there was a time where the bird was once free, but now is trapped. In the first stanza the use of imagery revealed how freedom felt before the bird was caged.
