There was and still is a huge dispute on whether Oedipus deserves the fate he was given or if he should have carried out with his free-will. The human society depends greatly on this topic as well, meaning do we control our fate or is it already chosen for us. With Oedipus’s situation, many people believe his fate was chosen years ahead by the god’s instead of letting him carry out his actions to face the consequences. That argument is what truly makes the story of Oedipus a classic story. After all the dispute, the fact that Oedipus got what he deserved is what should have happened, especially for all the sins he committed. In the play of ‘Oedipus the King’, there was a terrible curse placed upon the city of Thebes, resulting from the murder of the former king -King Laius. Oedipus sent his brother-in-law, Creon, to ask advice of Apollo. Creon passed on the message to Oedipus that the curse would be lifted once the killer of King Laius came forth and claimed his doings. Mainly because no one knew the secrets he hid. Most people trusted him more than the actual gods. Why? No one really knows, especially considering everything he did behind the scenes. If the gods were to not grant requests, everyone would turn straight to Oedipus and all he would do was tell them exactly what the oracle said. They thought of him as a wizard, or a man of great intelligence considering he knew the answer to every question. His success early in life made anything to harm anyone. He was the type of person that if he succeeded at one thing then he figured he was invincible and could never fail.
