Does Religion Serve A Significant Purpose

Although I would not consider myself to be particularly religious, I do believe that religion does serve a significant purpose. My family is Christian and I have grown up going to church and participating in religious events and celebrations. Anthropologists believe that religions serves three functions to humans, and I can see how it has functioned in my own life. To start with, I agree that religion helps people to answer life 's big questions. It is very common to ponder why humans are on earth, or what death is like, and religion gives many people a satisfying response. I had a difficult childhood, however I think my faith in God helped me live through the difficulties and adversity I have faced. For instance, my mother died when I was only three years old, and while I do not remember her, I do believe that she is like a guardian angel to me. I feel that sometimes she is with me or helps me through life. The last function of religion is that it provides a community to people. Since I was a child, I have been going to church, and there is a sense of community amongst the churchgoers. This is because I see these people every Sunday and on or leading up to religious holidays. For example, on Easter my family attends the Easter morning service at church which is followed by a lunch for the church members. In addition, I think that the reason that many religious people feel a sense of community is that it is often with members of the same or similar ethnicities. Thus, the familiarity makes people feel less alone and they feel confident in adhering to something in groups. People feel more confident with others, rather than by themselves and religion allows for many people with the same beliefs to be
