As James Dashner, the author who wrote The Maze Runner Series, said, “Be unpredictable, be real, be interesting. Tell a good story.” When people read a book they expect to be whisked away into its own world of characters, comedy, and adventure. People should be able to connect with the characters, feel emotions while reading, and the author must be able to captivate the reader with the plot and unexpected events of the story. Stories need to include highly descriptive and sensual detail to enhance the imagination of the reader and transport the reader into the setting of the story.
First of all, a great story has plot twists that keep the reader guessing. By incorporating surprising events to the point of shocking the reader, the author will keep the reader hooked and interested in the story. Sensual and descriptive details can help the reader vividly visualize the situation taking place and aid the reader to see it in their own perspective. For instance, one reader might imagine a character to be relatively different to another’s according to the description in the book. Using descriptions also allows the reader to make their own connections to the story. One reader might notice a detail he or she can connect with while another reader could easily read through that one detail. The descriptions of the setting and the character’s actions or body language can also impress upon the reader the mood of the event. The author might say something like, the character’s heart was racing and all he or she wanted to do was curl up into a ball and wait for someone to save her, this gives the idea that the character is frightened of
