Here’s Why the Toyota Prius Does Not Deserve All the Hate The Toyota Prius will surely show up on any list of “Most Hated Cars of 2016,” or even “Most Hated Cars Ever,” or possibly “Stupidest Things People Actually Buy.” But today, I am going against the crowd. Very much so. Today, I defend the Prius. The Prius may, in fact, not be as awful as everyone says. It completes the given task of good mileage, it does not try to be fast and doesn’t do so, and most of its bad reputation is because of it’s owners. So why is it so despised? It gets good mileage, which is what people buying a Prius want. Not speed. If you wanted speed, you’d get a Porsche! It gets good mileage, and that’s what it was meant to do. It’s like complaining that your personal computer doesn’t cook burgers well enough. Speaking of good mileage, the Prius certainly has it. The 2017 model gets inexplicably 58 mpg city and 53 mpg highway, which is backwards but good. This is compared with a national average of 24.8 miles per gallon. The Prius doubles this! It saves you money, and time at the gas station. There is a common argument on whether hybrids actually save the environment. But this is irrelevant! Either way, better fuel economy equals a better car! Even if it doesn’t mean it’s saving the pandas, at least it’s saving the cash. Take a look at the graphs below. They are comparing the Prius, the ultra-economy car, the Honda Accord, a midsize sedan and the 9th best selling car in America, and the Porsche 911 Turbo, a 540-horsepower bundle of fun. All three are good cars, and all three are completely different with completely different goals! The Prius tops in Fuel Economy, The 911 is the best in horsepower and 0-60 times, and the Accord sits happily in the middle of all three
