My question looks at how gravity, and the weight and size of different balls affects how long it takes to hit the ground. The balls I choose was the American football, golf ball, baseball, and tennis ball. As learned in this experiment, weight and size affect how fast the ball drop because gravity will cause the heavy ball to drop faster. This means that the heavier ball should fall faster, while the lighter ball should fall slower. I choose this topic because I want to know if ball sizes influence how fast the ball will hit the ground. My hypothesis states that the golf ball which weighs the least should be the one that drop the fastest. Another reason I thought it would have fallen down the fastest was because it’s the smallest ball. Then, I thought the second fastest ball would have been the tennis ball. After that I thought the third fastest ball would have been the baseball. Lastly, the slowest ball would have been the American football. …show more content…
I used a stopwatch to measure the time in seconds. I measured the time from when I threw the ball in the air until it landed back on the ground. I faced two problems while testing my hypothesis. One problem I faced was trying to avoid hitting the cars parked in my driveway with the balls. One of the balls did hit the car, but luckily it didn’t damage the car. Another problem I faced was trying to throw the ball at the right time. This was a problem because sometimes I would have started the stopwatch before the ball left my hand. My results show that on average the American football dropped the fastest. This is true for the football because it weighed the most so it dropped faster. The ball that dropped the slowest on average was the tennis ball and baseball. The reason why it dropped the slowest was because of air resistance. Air resistance causes these balls to drop the slowest, because as the balls was falling back down air resistance causes them to slow
