The fact that the inhumane sport of dog fighting exists in this country isn’t news to many of us. We’ve been aware of dog fighting for perhaps many years, but knowing that it’s simply bad doesn’t help the animals in need. Have any of us genuinely tried to do anything about the violence? Something I’ve noticed is that humans have a nasty habit of being remarkably self-centered. In all honesty, I’m guilty of it, too. We tend to find it preferable to ignore the grotesque parts of society, the parts that destroy ecosystems and abuse innocents and bomb other countries. Of that one million, 16,000 are dogs that end up dying in fighting pits. Greedy people stage their fights in places most people won’t come across, such as rustic barns, abandoned warehouses, outdoor pits, or back alleys. The dogs brawl until one is declared winner, meaning that the other one is severely injured or dead. While a winning dog can rake in cash for the lowlife person behind it, a losing dog is consequently shot square in the head. This kind of behavior should make you nauseous. It’s already illegal in all fifty states, what other actions are we able to take to encourage the safety of our canines? Well, first of all, police departments can probably raise the priority level for these issues of animal abuse. Until 1986, only four states even had laws against these crimes, so it’s not like it’s been on the forefront of their minds for the longest time. Also, regular Americans should begin to care more. Stop changing the channel. Buy more dogs from pounds rather than pet stores. Adopt older dogs, or dogs that seem more vicious.
