Haley Boyd Introduction to Theatre-1000-602 Reflective journal entry #2 In the play entitled Dog Lady, the author Milcha Sanchez-Scott uses a thought provoking approach to share the ideas of a Catholic culture trying to blend into an American cultural system. The play is written in a comedic fashion but causes the reader to think seriously about changes that occur in the lives of the various characters in the play. This reflective journal writing will look at the elements of drama, and how Rosalina transitioned to find her identity. The six elements of dramatic structure are revealed as you experience activities each day in the life of Rosalina Lunia. The first dramatic structure element to be discussed is character. Character is simply defined as the people who are in the play. The roles of the character can range from the most important to the least important person and at times in the story can interchange. Our first character to discuss would be Rosalina Lunia. I would describe Rosalina as one of the most important characters or an extraordinary character. Ms. Ruiz is the reason that Rosalina is able to fulfill her desire to travel outside of her closed- knit surroundings and explore the openness of the world. Ms. Ruiz gives Rosalina a special necklace that is said to possess the spirit of a dog. Ms. Ruiz is also struggling to find her place in the community and in the social group in her neighborhood. Ms. Ruiz is seen differently from the norm in the neighborhood therefore people intentionally avoid having contact with her. Ms. Ruiz has had many pleasant encounters with Rosalina and feels an obligation to help as well.
