As soon as someone enters McDonald’s, they are welcomed with a fresh smell of French fries that stirs up childhood glee. Even with a very conventional entrance and an ordinary parking arrangement, McDonald’s has tried to fascinate its customers with the small family memories that are stored inside the restaurant. It serves the purpose of being both a fast food restaurant as well as a family restaurant with its design. The interior design and seating arrangements make one feel at home. The feeling of home comes from the very first gaze at the conventional bright red roof which gives a sense of a countryside house. From the outside, the shape looks like a very ordinary countryside house. One would expect to find their neighbors if they walk inside the restaurant, and most of the time they do. The interior design is focused to relay a social and cultural message. The architecture and materials that are used also promote socialism. As LaVine in the chapter “The Dogon and the Issue of Domain” mentioned about how the selection of building materials and crafts help in determining the base for social and cultural values. LaVine stated, “The richness of the ideas created by architectural domains in the absence of the social and cultural constructs that these assemblies might be interpreted to convey” (16). Even strangers sit down by the lounge near the large flat screen TV and discuss politics, sports, news, or even music and enjoy the free Wi-Fi as well. The dining room is large enough to handle 90 customers. The wooden chairs (that can be found in most dining rooms at home), the colored stools, and the leather-like looking vinyl covered chairs give a feel of home. People that come in groups or families can seat in a booth, and those that come by themselves can sit and dine by the lounge. A large hanging flat-screen TV that plays a contemporary music and sometimes news is intended to keep customers for a longer period of time. The various kinds of chairs, booth, stools, and TV make this place edgy, contemporary and cozy. The intention seems to be clear: McDonald’s is a place where people can come in, dine in, spend a long quality time with friends and families, and yet be an excellent fast food restaurant. The sense of warmth and being at home also comes from the smell coming from the kitchen. The smell of the burgers and fries sticks to one’s mind for a very long time.
