You have 2 options with no other way out: doing the right thing, and doing the wrong thing. Which will you choose to do? Will you choose the right thing because it’s what you should choose, or will you choose the wrong thing because it’s the easier thing to choose? In Harper Lee’s classic novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, she displays many ways of doing the right thing using the characters. Atticus, Miss Maudie, Jem, Scout, and Mr. Underwood all demonstrate understanding and doing the right thing, even when it’s a challenging decision. Primarily, many characters in this book represent these themes, such as Atticus Finch, Miss Maudie, Jem, and Scout. Miss Maudie. she never laughed unless it was meant to be funny” (307). Jem and Scout displayed understanding to Tom Robinson when they snuck into the courthouse to observe what was happening and to support Atticus and Tom Robinson. “Scout, come on, there ain’t a seat left. We’ll have to stand up” (218). This is an extremely meaningful part of the book due to the fact that Tom Robinson ends up being the mockingbird, and they execute him in the end, so it was good that they cared for him but at the same time it was very tragic what happened. Not everything works out fairly in the end because that's the way life is, but people like Atticus, Miss Maudie, Scout, and Jem make it better. Secondly, there are several other ways Atticus Finch shows understanding. Atticus Finch displays this by understanding the feelings of Mrs. Dubose, even when she is very unkind to him. “... she had her own view about things, a lot different from mine,... She was the bravest person I ever knew” (149). Another way Atticus Finch expressed understanding was when he understood that Walter Cunningham was poor and could not pay off what he owed him, and allowed him to pay another
