The subject, Dolly Parton interested me because I am a fan of her music and songwriting but I wanted to know more about where she came from and what her life was like growing up. In my paper, I will talk about the way Dolly grew up to her long-life accomplishments. I listen to Dolly's music all the time and I was introduced by my friend Kensley as well as my mom Mary at a young age, but I have never known the true meaning behind the lyrics of her songs. Dolly Parton was born and grew up in a home with no running water or working electricity (Miller 20). From growing up with 0 electricity and running water to living in big mansions all over the world I think that Dolly growing up in the circumstances that she did, made her work harder for what she has today. Dolly took her childhood trauma and put it into many of her songs. Dolly wrote many of her songs at the begging of her career about her life growing up (Friskics-Waren 2). Dolly signed her first single label in high school, Its Sure Going To Hurt with Mercury Records and the label flopped miserably (Dexter 3). Still early on in Dolly's career, failing and succeeding, she never gave up hope and continued pursuing her dream of singing and songwriting, and almost 60 years later she's one of America's top country music stars. Early in Dolly's career and still, to this day, Dolly's body figure is and is and was sexualized by many tv and studio producers (Levitin 2). In response, Dolly wrote and produced the song Joleen to talk about the fears and hardships that she and other women may share about men (Miller 281). Dolly went through being sexualized and took the trauma and fear and turned the song Joleen into a joy for all of her fans to listen to, even though her meaning for the song was to spread awareness. The ’60s were not a good time for female country singers. Dolly singles never sold as well as her male duets or band productions (Dexter 3). Dolly made it through the sexiest ‘60s while continuing to make money and, producing music. Early in Dolly's career when she was doing more acting than singing, Dolly’s mental and physical health went downhill. Dolly's body weight went from low to high and back to low aging all in a short time. Dolly Parton never took this dilemma seriously, she would make comments and jokes about the terrible situation to
