Reflection During this course, I have been surprised at the number of competencies and skills a school administrator must have. Having served as an administrator for nearly ten years, I was aware of the diversity of demands placed on someone in school leadership. However, to have the competencies organized by group and laid out raised my awareness of the skills needed by a school administrator. Domain 1 Domain 1 is focused on the school community relationship. Studying this domain made me realize that the school administrator defines excellence in the arts, academics, and school culture. The prevailing attitudes of the school community will be set by the principal by the vision he develops and communicates, and how effective he is in implementing and maintaining that vision. It is essential that the vision is a collaborative effort of administration, faculty, teachers, families, and community leaders. After the vision is developed, the principal must be able to effectively communicate that vision to the school community, while meeting all their diverse needs by mobilizing the appropriate financial or personnel resources. Using sound, research-based date, an effective school administrator develops, implements, and evaluates all curricular programs, as well as co-curricular and extra-curricular. A principal must also be aware of issues as diverse as economic trends to curriculum design that will affect campus planning. In addition, he must be aware of district policies concerning curriculum revision, curriculum alignment, and curriculum scope and sequence. Appropriate assessments of student learning must take place, while promoting creative thinking and problem solving among the various members of the school community.
