In the 1986 excerpt, Mr Dombey and Ms Dombey are sitting near the fire on a relaxing evening. Mr Dombey describes the moments of him by the first beside their newly born child. And his wife, tired after the birth beside him, unable to speak.
Mr Dombey likes to compare himself to the likes of his son. He describers with imagery the specific details that are alike to his own. He describes himself as “Rather bald, rather red” compared to his son calling him “Very bald, and very red”. He then begins to describe his son’s brow, which was wrinkled to the likeness of a tree. He puts the blame and uses personification against ideals such as “time” and “care” comparing the two like they were brothers. And then he says that time will heal and care for those creases. Only to know that in the future that time's’ “Scythe” would go deeper, in reference to the death of either himself, or of the son later on into the future.
Into the next paragraph;s ahead, he then describes how his son, with his fist clutched up into the air, symbolized him fighting and squaring into his existence so abruptly. He then takes pride into his son’s existence thinking about the house name, more importantly the company name. He goes as far as to account for almost all forms of imagery saying that he and him are like all of the beauties of earth and the space around them. Examples like water, the sun, the moon, and rainbows. Then going on to say that they are like the earth and that the stars and the planet orbit around him and his son. And to even claim as much as that the definition of A.D (Anno Domini) was actually (Anno Dombei and son) really shows how important and highly he thinks of his son.
