Compare and contrast the Dome of Florence’s Cathedral by Brunelleschi (1420-1436) and Bramante’s Tempietto, San Pietro in Montorio, Rome (1502). The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore or in English, ‘Cathedral of Saint Mary of The Flower’ (Florence’s Cathedral) is the main church of Florence, Italy. It is begun construction in 1296 with Gothic style by Arnolfo di Cambio, such as pointed arches and rib vaulting, and was completely structured in 1436 where dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. In the modern era, development of new structural materials made the dome was the largest brick dome in the world which vast enough to cover the entire Tuscan. It is considered as a masterpiece of High Renaissance Italian architecture where the building is perfectly proportioned. It is composed of slender Tuscan columns, a Doric entablature modelled and a dome which greatly reflected Brunelleschi’s style. It was constructed from bearing a masonry. Centrally planned churches were already employed by early Christians for martyriums and because of that, Bramante would have been aware of these precedents, and as a result, the Tempietto is circular due to respect of antiquity of Christian purposes. The circular temple supports a classical entablature and framed in the shadowy arch of the cloister. It shows the earliest example of the use of Tuscan order in the Renaissance where it is a form of the Doric order which stated by Vitruvius is the relationship between the order and the nature of the divinity. From the plan view, this building was intended to be square which is Brunelleschi main architectural personality. Dome on top as it is wide was inspired by perfect circle from Leonardo and it was the first time for Renaissance architect use Doric triglyphs to support the dome.
