PA 604: Domestic Violence Data Exploration Project My research topic for this data exploration project was influenced by reading the Bureau of Justice Statistics 2014 Annual Criminal Victimization Report. From that publication, an intriguing statistic caught my attention and research interest. “The rate of domestic violence, which includes crime committed by intimate partners and family members, remained stable from 2013 to 2014 (4.2 per 1,000). No measurable change was detected from 2013 to 2014 in the rate of intimate partner violence (2.4 per 1,000), which includes victimizations committed by current or former spouses, boyfriends, or girlfriends” (BJS Criminal Victimization, August 2015). I decided to investigate how this statistic was concluded by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).
Nicole’s Murder According to Simpson & Haven, the murder of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman was a shock to the nation, but what was more appalling is the fact that O.J. Simpson was the one on trial for those murders. The authorities were more concerned of the victims’ rights were being neglected (Simpson & Haven, 2008). This paper will expose Nicole Simpson first time reporting intimate violence to the authorities long before her death. I will also examine stalking and intimate violence, victim rights as well as protection provided by the regulation and how it pertains to the case of Nicole Simpson.
The main objective of this article to see is domestic violence courts are meeting their goal to improve quality and process of the criminal justice response. An interview was done with justice stakeholders and the accused to know the impact of the courts. The two main principles of domestic violence courts are to provide early intervention to low risk and offenders and right prosecution for the serious offenders. By interviewing the accused the research found out that most were satisfied with what type of treatment they were offered by the court. There were some comments by the accused that domestic violence courts are biased in favor towards the victims.
The subject of autonomy is something that really caught my eye in our most recent readings. With what seems like a million definitions it could be hard to grasp the actual meaning of the word. Throughout the reading I began to understand more what the word meant and began to become more intrigue on how it is tied into victims of domestic violence. The big question at hand is if women who are subject to domestic violence can act autonomously at all? After falling victim to domestic violence are women capable of even protecting themselves or putting themselves in a situation away from their abusive partner?
Domestic violence is a fast growing worldwide phenomenon which expresses through physical and psychological abuse of the victim by the violent side. As part of it, there are men who abuse their women in different ways, who can be categorized as "Pit-bulls" or "Cobras" by different features. In this essay I will present differences and similarities between the two types of abusive men. On the one hand, "Cobras" and "Pit-bulls" are very alike when it comes to decision making, because they have both chosen a violent pattern of aggression and abuse in order to deal with marriage or couple conflicts instead of using other ways such as: using more verbal communication with their women, getting professional help from a marriage/couple counselor or putting more time and effort into working marriage/couple problems out in a creative way. But, the two types make a full aware choice of turning to violence and abuse as a solution to problems, they do have different ways of expressing it, but the decision to turn to violence remains the same.
Spousal Abuse People often turn away from issues that do not affect them, but this only lets the issue grow further until there is nothing left to do but deal with it. This could be why domestic violence has been taking place for centuries now. One issue that comes with domestic violence is spousal abuse- a problem that only seems to be getting worse, with ten million victims being beaten by an intimate partner each year (“Domestic Violence”). Although spousal abuse seems to be an ongoing issue in the United States, efforts are being made at both national and local levels to suppress the violence.
The Good and the Bad Victims of domestic violence are not at fault for the abuse that is inflicted upon them. A lot of people ask why the victim stayed in the first place, but in some cases the answer is not always so simple. According to Why Do Abuse Victims Stay, “We often put ourselves in the place of the victims and imagine ourselves leaving at the first signs of abuse. But breaking free of abuse is not simply a matter of walking out the door. Leaving is a process.”
Many women are experiencing controlling and violent environment which should be about intimacy, love and care. In relation to this social justice issue, domestic violence all these theories can be applied effectively to assist in a practitioner’s work. Psychodynamic is a micro leveled practice involving more individualized work investigating the user’s unconscious behaviors and mental processors. Systems theory focuses on keeping a balanced equilibrium with marriage counselling and other forms of community assistance to help the user adapt to their environment. The critical perspective, feminist theory, works alongside the user in order to help identify social injustices and assists to empower and educate them.
Domestic Violence is often defined as the recurring pattern of behaviour in an intimate relationship that is used in order to control, maintain or gain power over a partner; this includes physical, sexual, emotional and psychological abuse (Davies 2008, p. 1; Department of social services 2015 & Australian Bureau of statistics 2013). The principal purpose of this essay is to offer a range of sociological explanation that justifies why domestic violence is happening. Social conflict and symbolic interactionism are the two theories that have been explored. Jacquelyn C. Campbell defines intimate partner violence as “physical or sexual assault, or both,” of a spouse or sexually intimate partner. She speaks about how damaging this type of violence can be to women. Campbell provided information from past studies to explain why interventions and assessments should be increased in health-care settings to identify more of these situations. The author looked at information from the past decade and used only the surveys that were in English.
