The Iliad, written by Homer in 750 BC, is definitely something that will be remembered for centuries. Although it is old, there are many allusions to things that we see in today’s word, including families, women’s rights, and even domestic violence. In Ancient Greece, we can see a reflection of how families and women are often treated today. In Book Six of The Iliad, Hector visits his wife, Andromache, and his son. Hera is supporting the Greeks, and Zeus is supporting the Trojans. Zeus becomes angry at Hera and says “‘Silence please, and sit down, and do what I tell you. All the gods in Olympos will not help you if I come near and lay my heavy hands upon you.’” (Homer 17) According to dictionary.com, the definition of domestic violence is “violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner.” What Zeus was going to do to Hera is definitely considered as domestic violence. It’s strange to think that something that is getting a lot of air time now was in an issue in something that seems as far away as Ancient Greece. It was even seen about their highest esteemed people, their gods. Now, we turn on the news and see reports of domestic violence. Something that has recently made lots of air time is Ray Rice’s case. Claims had been previously made against him, but it wasn’t believed until there was video proof. Celebrities can be regarded as our ‘gods’, since people seem to worship them. Ray Rice can be considered a football god, since Ravens fans everywhere probably think he’s great. Now, in today’s world, we are seeing our ‘gods’ do exactly what Greek gods were doing thousands of years ago. Of course, it is not just celebrities that commit the crime of domestic violence.
