Domestic violence is what a lot of society is naming an increasing problem in the United States. This study is important because a lot of children are witnessing domestic violence not only in the media, but possibly in their own homes. This research topic can help a lot of people understand both the long and short-term effects domestic violence has on children and how to prevent it. Whether or not it is physical abuse, children go through emotional and psychological trauma from domestic violence. Children observe any and everything and if they witness their parents disrespecting each other or anyone else around them being disrespectful or abusive, this generally teaches children that they can be disrespectful and abusive to others as well. Studies show that most children, physical aggression begins to diminish when they are two or three, as they learn to regulate and express their emotions, particularly through language. Parents and other family members believe that keeping violence away from children is difficult due to their surroundings. However, children witness violence on television and video games as well as hearing about it through many other sources. Unfortunately, children in early childhood not only are exposed to violence, but become victims as well. Exposure to violence is defined as the vicarious experience of violence such as hearing about violence, being the direct victim of a violent act, or witnessing violence involving others.
