Introduction Background Information (General statement of the problem): Domestic violence against women, which is “the most common type of violence against women worldwide”, refers to “the physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse of women by their intimate partners or ex-partners”(D.V.A.,2001). Nearly a third of surveyed women sustained two or three types of ill-treatment including physical, mental and sexual violence. (Guo et al., 2003) (2) Causes of the problem The causes of the problem can be analyzed from the angles of victims, victimizer and externalities incorporating imperfect legal and educative system. Cause One (Topic sentence): There are two stale but pervasive beliefs supporting the perpetrators. Firstly, gender inequality diffusely exists in both reality and conception. On the other hand, a culture of violence is deeply ingrained in Chinese rural families’ culture so that men are used to solve problems with violence. Elaboration/explanation with evidence: After the Reform and Opening-up, men who have physical advantages and master more resources take the lead in waking into the labor market so that women have to compensate the loss of labor. Then it results in the Agricultural Feminization. Men are still the major contributors to household income so they’re in power of dominant while rural women economically depend on their husbands.
