Many people disagree that emotional support animals should or should not be considered service animals. Amanda M. Foster wrote an article about this called “Don’t Be Distracted by the Peacock.” Foster claimed that emotional support animals should be clearly treated the same as service animals, since they both help and assist people. Consequently, to add to her point, Foster uses facts and statistics to help prove her main point. “In 1968, Congress enacted the FHA to prohibit discrimination in the purchase or rental of housing.” (Foster, 2018, p. 255). She uses this fact to appeal to the audience's sense of reason and logic. “A 2017 Kaiser Permanente poll showed that 73 percent of correspondents thought that psychiatric disabilities should be treated no differently than physical ones," said Amanda M. Foster. She uses this poll to show people that what she’s saying is commonly agreed with, using the ad populum fallacy, which means that she’s pointing out that most people agree with her in hopes it will persuade her audience. Nevertheless, along with her more logical options, Foster also appeals to the audience's ethos. She does this by pointing out how unfair it is that people with emotional support animals get treated differently than people with service animals. “Individuals with disabilities should not have to rely on the tenuous provisions of peripheral legislation that have been the recent subject of debate.” (Foster, 2018, p.
