In the chapter “Don’t Get Mad; Don’t Get Even; Get Ahead” Matthews discusses ways one cannot waste energy trying to get back at an enemy. It states how one should focus efforts on getting simply ahead of the enemy. The chapter cites the dilemma of former Speaker Newt Gingrich who attempted to shut down various government institutions after Bill Clinton forced him to exit Air Force One from the back.
