Collapse Dorothea Orem’s Self Care Framework is focused upon the patient’s intentional actions that will meet his/her own needs. This framework also addresses how the nurse can take deliberate actions that help facilitate a patient’s self-care within his/her own limitations to foster a sense of empowerment for the patient. Orem’s framework identifies the concepts of ‘self care’ and ‘self-care agency’. According to Kearney-Nunnery (2012), ‘self-care is directed by individuals to themselves or their environment to regulate factors that affect their own development and functioning’ as to enhance overall well-being. They are paraphrased as follows: 1.The patient’s ability to pay attention to and display the needed effort in regards to self-care and being his/her own self-care agent. 2.The ability to use his/her energy wisely to maintain effective self-care. 3.The patient must be able to use the body’s position and parts effectively to maintain sufficient self-care. 4.The patient must have the ability to reason within a ‘self-care’ framework. 5.The patient must have a motivation or goal to maintain his/her well-being. 6.The ability to make his/her own decisions regarding self-care. 7.The patient must be able to obtain any need technical knowledge from reliable sources, retain it, understand it and implement the knowledge. 8.The patient must have a base of ‘cognitive, perceptual, manipulative, communication, and interpersonal skills adapted to the performance of self-care operations’ (Kearney-Nunnery, 2012). 9.The ability to order actions in way that will produce the best self-care outcome. 10.The patient must have the ability to consistently perform self-care actions and integrate them into his/her personal and community
