Dorothy Vaughan Human Computer Teacher, mother, and wife, are three words that describe Dorothy Vaughan. Many people know that Dorothy Vaughan was the one of the people to figure out the equation to launch the first rocket into space but she was so much more. As a well know human computer, Dorothy Vaughan showed society that a black women could do the same or more then men. She left a lasting legacy as one of the women who lead us into space. The early life of Dorothy Vaughan was very important for her education. Her parents were important to her education. Dorothy was born on September 20, 1910.(Shetterly web) Dorothy’s mom died when she was two and then her father got remarried a year after her mother died.(Shetterly 12) Her step mom helped her learn and turn into a beautiful young women. In the neighborhood she was a member at her local church which was the first Baptist church and played the piano every Sunday at the church. In Morgantown Dorothy Vaughan’s house was down the street from West Virginia University. Dorothy Vaughan attended Beechhurst elementary school that encouraged Dorothy Vaughan to go to college and that would lead her to her career with Nasa. Dorothy Vaughan’s college and job was major part of her life. Dorothy Vaughan got a full Valedictorian scholarship to Wilberforce University. Vaughan was the top of her class as she major in math at her university. Her professor told her that she might want to look into go to another college and that a college for whites was looking into her but she was not expected. Dorothy Vaughan graduated in 1929.
