Language was a tool that the Party used to manipulate the people of the society. The Party had recreated the language and history by altering it so that a lot truths will be forgotten and falsified facts will replace it. This helps with the Party’s propaganda. Being able to alter the language and events of history changes the way people would think. Thinking may be considered a crime in the book “1984”. This crime is called “thoughtcrime” which is unacceptable thoughts and having beliefs and doubts in one’s mind. Certain thoughts may be allowed, but most aren’t because of the Party’s control over language and thoughts. The whole point why the Party wants to control language was to not have individualism in the society. Language today is very important to this world because few things may be said which could lead to a whole lot of changes. ““Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.”(Orwell, 214), stated by the book “1984”. Doublethink creates two beliefs that are contradictory that a person can’t tell the difference. Therefore, the person uses doublethink to believe in both beliefs. This self deception of doublethink helps the Party by making the people in the Ministry of Truth believe in the falsified information they have written. This makes people tell lies that they will believe in without doubting themselves. The language is controlled by doublethink by reducing the amount of thought needed so simple words may be said. This brainwashing makes one simpleminded and obtuse. Furthermore, one will be unable to compose thoughts in one’s mind that may imperil the Party.
