Doug's Story Essay: Life After The Civil War

Our story begins with Doug, who was a slave on a remote mining site in the middle of Alaska. He and his friend Joe, along with 286 other slaves would work from 6 am to 11 pm each day in a deep coal mine for their owner; Donald. It was a hard working life but Doug figured out a way to get out. But of course any story isn’t that quick or simple, Doug ran into a bigger problem as he left the site, which we will soon find out. On August 27th 2014 Doug and Joe were woken up by another whip right on the back by Donald, they were ordered to get straight to the mine and get to work, having no choice they went, and picked up their rusty steel pickaxes. On the way to the site Joe asked Doug, “Do you think we'll ever get out of here?” “I don’t think so” Doug replied in a sad tone “But if we did it would be so nice, to have a home and some food with taste!” Doug then went off mining in his regular spot, which was at the farthest point in the mountain the slaves dig in, but when he struck his pickaxe into the piece of coal light started shining through. Along the ride the man asked where they were going, Joe said that he would go to Vancouver, because it happens to be close, Doug also agreed to go there. The old man then replied "I can take you straight there, I happen to live there, you can also stay with me until you get on your feet." The ride went smoothly until they hit the U.S. and Canada border where the officer asked for all of their passports, the old man was fine but when Joe and Doug were found with no I.D. or passports, so they were kicked off the car and stuck in
