The most important topic I found intruding and interesting during the Dr. Adam Hart lecture on Friday was how he explained monsters in horror movies are portrayed as our anxieties. He first talked about the classic horror characters such as Freddy Kruger and Michael Myers and their mainstream role. When the topic of horror is brought up, it’s pretty obvious they’re the type of characters when we think about when someone hears the film genre “horror. Even for people who never seen these movies, they’ll still be aware who these characters are. I was aware that the main reason people are scared of monsters in horrors is that monsters are normally chasing people trying to kill them. However, I never really thought of monster as an anxiety and is the main reason why characters tries to escape them. Obviously, people try to avoid topics such as death which is why horror is considered scary. I believe this is the reason why It Follows and The Babadook are considered a new horror genre. Comparing these two movies to the theory, it perfectly explains the reason why these film are considered are scary. Hart explained that the audience doesn’t really catch a full glimpse of the monsters in both films. The audience only sees the monster in It Follows as an ordinary person and we only catch a split second to see the Babadook. These effects bring awareness to the fear of the unknown. The reason why people are scared of these monsters is that we never see them, “it” and the Babadook are two characters we never see their presence until it’s too late, enhancing our anxieties.
