Throughout history, there have been many serial killers, with all means of murder, including firearms, knives, and chainsaws. However, many people overlook serial killers that used toxins (or poisons), such as H.H. Holmes. H. H. Holmes, or Herman Webster Mudgett, or Dr. Henry Howard Holmes is a famous American serial killer through the use of a toxin. Holmes, also often referred to as ‘America's First Serial Killer,’ was an American born in New Hampshire in 1861, during the beginning of the Civil War. Born as Herman Webster Mudgett, he changed his name after graduating high school at the age of 16 to Henry Howard Holmes. After studying medicine, Holmes was later accepted into the University of Michigan Medical School. Many scandals were brought against him, including one where Holmes stole cadavers, burned them, and hid bodies to make it look like they had been killed. The motivation behind the scandal was that people believed Holmes took life insurance policies out on these people, and would cash in once the bodies were found. In 1884, Holmes passed his medical exams and moved to Chicago, where he worked as a pharmacist under the alias Dr. H. H. Holmes. A few years later, the pharmacist owner passed away and left the pharmacy to his wife, who later sold the pharmacy to Holmes.
