Eder Perez Mrs. Moore English II ECHS A5 23 February 2024 DJMH Literary Analysis Choosing between good and bad can be a struggle for anyone every day. In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this struggle is shown through the actions of a kind man named Dr. Jekyll who hides an evil identity within him. Dr. Jekyll lets evil dominate him, causing him to harm many people, including himself. This only continues until he is convinced things won’t end well for him, however, he decides to get rid of this evil forever by taking himself down with it. Stevenson portrays the struggle between the duality of man when choosing between good and evil becomes a problem in man's lifestyle. Einfield is walking alone in the streets at night, he sees a young girl get run over by a reckless Mr. Hyde who he describes as “some damned Juggernaut.” For someone to be described in such a way, metaphorically, they must be destructive and unstoppable. While the parents checked their child to see if she had been injured, Mr. Hyde proposed doing or giving anything to avoid confrontation with the law. Mr. Einfield “screwed him up to a hundred pounds for the child’s family” to which Mr. Hyde showed no hesitation and was true to his words. After telling the story of this event to Mr. Utterson, Mr. Einfield struggles to describe the character of Mr. Hyde as being “something displeasing” and giving “a strong feeling of deformity,” the reason being it was unexpected for Mr. Hyde to compensate the family for running over the child. Indeed, Mr. Hyde can quickly be judged and seen as careless and cruel for his actions, yet his identity remains a mystery as he never introduced himself.
