The genre of horror and mystery is defined by its ability to create suspense, fear, and a sense of the unknown, this ultimately challenges the reader’s perception of reality and explores the depths of human nature. Published in 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson wrote The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde after experiencing a nightmare, he presents nature as having good and evil sides. Relating this to aspects of horror and mystery, Stevenson describes his work as “a fine bogey tale” along with aiming to the two sides using a drug and the aspects of his alter ego. One could even argue evil overpowers good. This role is shown in The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, “Where you might think of tone as the theme of the text, the mood is its atmosphere. Stevenson uses dark colors to describe Victorian London, which in turn creates a dark, ominous mood”(Tarr) as the theme is represented by the mood of the atmosphere. Stevenson’s color tone uses this setting which produces a dark mood. How is this novel an example of ominous tones in horror and mystery? Horror and mystery do a great job of painting colors in a story, moved by the viewpoint of the author within the general atmosphere, color tones even can present the setting and the predicted flow of a passage. For example, this novel is set with dark themes. More can tie into the mood and the setting as ominous can be used in the tone, how the author approaches the story along with the use of suspense. “The one where the outcome cannot be avoided and the one where the outcome is a mystery”(Albizu). This brings the mystery out, it’s used to make the reader guess, to set them up to expect the worst, or to have them off-guard.
