From the beginning of this book, it becomes apparent that to this society appearance is a big deal and it reflects how people view someone and their personality. The author first introduces the character Mr. Hyde through a story being told by one individual to another. The man telling the story, Mr. Enfield, never spoke to Mr. Hyde, he just saw him, saw his face, his clothing, and he could draw conclusions about his character. Hyde was depicted as being “pale and dwarfish” with an “impression of deformity”. (10) People saw him as being disgusting and not human which caused them to take a step away, and avoid him. Although basing someone’s personality purely off their looks is not polite nor right, in terms of Mr. Hyde and his looks verses his personality, these people were entirely correct. Now, Hyde’s character is connected to another named Dr. Jekyll. Dr. Jekyll created an additional person out of himself. He took his evil side and separated it, so that he could become wicked Mr. Hyde whenever he chose. While Dr. Jekyll conducted his experiments, he describes Hyde as having “evil written broadly and plainly” (45) on his face. In yet another instance, this shows how Hyde’s appearance directly reflects his personality. Later on in the story, the author introduces Hyde’s actions more to the reader, and it becomes clear that he is solely malicious. His actions escalate from beginning till the end of the book to the point where he becomes overpowering towards Dr. Jekyll. Jekyll would continue to become Mr. Hyde unintentionally which made Hyde become stronger and stronger and his actions became more criminal like than ever. Hyde is first introduced as he tramples over a little girl without looking back. It clearly becomes out of control when he commits murder against an innocent man by “clubbing him to the earth” (15). Hyde’s appearance judged heavily, we also see people viewing Dr. Jekyll’s exterior, and perceiving his personality completely wrong. Dr. Jekyll was a scientist who was well liked by many. He was raised in a rich, polite family and his actions growing up always reflected that. He continued to be a good man who always treated others with respect. Many of his friends viewed him to be “a large, well made, smooth-faced man of fifty, with something of a stylish cast perhaps, but every mark of capacity of kindness” (12). All along while his companions were seeing a put together, cordial gentleman, Dr. Jekyll had a whole other side to his personality that others couldn’t see from the surface. The author doesn’t truly show Jekyll’s disposition until the end but we see his character deteriorating throughout the story. The Jekyll people knew started to disappear, and Hyde slowly began to take over. Dr. Jekyll would hole up in his house, locked away from all contact. He no longer threw gatherings for all his friends at his house, he was just sulking away in his quarters. This change in Jekyll was surprising to his peers because while they knew him, he had put on a look that concealed a whole other side to his nature. All along, he had this deep-down longing to be something else. Dr. Jekyll always believed that there was a “duality of man”, and if he could discover how to separate both identities of evil and good, then “life would be relieved of all that was
